No Thank You: A Writing Prompt
No thank you for turning your backs when I needed you the most. No thank you for telling me things no woman should ever hear and doing things that I didn't 'ask for' or 'deserve'. No thank you for saying I couldn't do something, or making me do things that weren't in my best interest.
No thank you for making my girls feel uncomfortable while you rambled on with your personal agenda. No thank you for telling my girls that it's not 'normal' to have divorced parents. No thank you for pretending that I don't exist or that I'm 'mentally ill' and unable to care for myself. No thank you.
No thank you for judging me, pointing out everywhere I was wrong, sharing NUNYA BUSINESS with strangers and pushing me into a corner. No thank you for shaming me in public, forcing me from common areas, and taking away my freedom. And, certainly, no thank you for never listening to me, asking me thoughtful questions, or even trying to understand. No thank you.
And while I'm on this roll, no thank you for telling me I'm 'just too' something that doesn't fit positively into your flawless world. No thank you for telling me I'm too short, too chubby, too Italian, too foul-mouthed, too outspoken, too unapproachable, too intimidating, too laid back, or too aggressive.
No thank you for thinking that therapy is 'weird' and I'm 'troubled'. No thank you for prefacing a 'congratulatory' comment with 'well, considering you're a [fill in the blank].
And certainly, no thank you for thinking I'm not worthy because I'm a strong women.
